FREDRIK BACKMAN
ABOUT ME
I picked up my first “real” camera in 2009, when I was just below 30, and started learning what it was all about. In the very beginning, I undermated the complexity involved in making good photos and I lost my patience. The camera was left gathering dust.
But for some reason, a year later, I decided to give it another try. And from that point on, the thousands of hours spent with a camera have opened up a new world for me. It’s funny how some people say that you should bring your camera to new places. For me, it has been the camera that has brought me to new experiences. And it still does.
Currently, I live with my wife and two daughters in Drottningholm, on the island of Lovön just west of Stockholm city. Many of the images you see on these pages are taken in the beautiful surrounding nature close to my doorstep.
ABOUT MY PHOTOGRAPHY
When starting out, I identified myself as a bird photographer. Period. The non-bird images I made were few (and not very good, to be honest). However, the more time I put into developing my skills, the more of a generalist I find myself gradually becoming. And the more I learn, the more I find that the very basics of making a good image are typically the same, independent on setting and object.
To me, great photography is all about being prepared to make an effort. To put in that little extra energy into each and every single frame to improve the end result. And to do it consistently.
In practice, this can mean very different things. It can range from embarking on a long-haul photography expedition to a distant place, to taking that one single step sideways and find it dramatically improving your composition. It can be about sitting in a cold and wet swamp for hours waiting for the sun to rise, or just take a minute to watch and study the light before picking up the camera from the bag. In the end, the extra effort is almost always worthwile! That is why there needs to be will and passion behind the lens in order to make really good images.
ABOUT MY IMAGES
The images you see on these pages all have one important thing in common; I am proud of them. And that is the reason why I really want to show them to you. That is why I constructed this web page - for that single purpose only.
So please, if you have the time, browse around my images and see if you find something that you like. And if you do – please tell me about it. I can promise you, it will make my day!
Enjoy!
